Watch what you watch !

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Thomas Jefferson

The negative sensationalism of news has been steadily increasing over the last decade.

This makes us feel the world is unsafe and generates fear and mistrust when in reality a lot of good positive things happen everyday. Even during the worst events acts of compassion and kindness outweigh the negative. During such events humanity comes together and barriers are dropped. News outlets compete for emotionally evoking stories to generate higher viewing figures and ratings at the expense of positive, heart warming stories.

News stories distort reality it would be more beneficial to have local news giving information on how to manage local community issues. So that opportunities can be focused on rather than skewed towards the problems. News reporters do not want to bring out the best in the person they are interviewing but try to put words into their mouths to enhance their own angle.

Psychological studies reveal that watching negative news stories has an impact on our wellbeing directly affecting our mood increasing stress and anxiety hormones. Similar  feelings are evoked by horror films and crime thrillers.

Awareness of what is happening around the world is important but constantly bombardment of this information does not help us or the victims.

We can take back control of what we choose to watch and listen to, just as we choose what to eat and drink. Studies show that listening to your favourite music or audio book will help elevate mood. Currently we have so much technology at our finger tips so we can be selective and choose inputs that make us feel good rather than feeling bad.

Short periods of silence allow our brains to reboot and has shown to have a calming effect as well as reducing stress and anxiety. We do not have to be plugged in 24/7 and we will not miss out. Instead we can be more selective and thus take back our own remote control.

If any readers have positive news stories please email me and in the future I can share them on this site.

Sending love and Blessings xx
